Post Accident Self Portrait Diptych (2009) by Vivian Fu
These are the only images that I took of myself after I was in an accident which took place two days before my 19th birthday in 2009. I was crossing a street in Venice Beach and was struck by a BMW SUV. It seems strange that I didn’t obsessively document myself during this time of my life, as well as the year of healing and subsequent surgeries that I had to undergo and I regret not having done so. I haven’t ever felt this nervous posting a self portrait in my entire life.
The top image was taken when I was admitted to the hospital and the bottom image was taken after my facial reconstructive surgery.
I’m sure this is going to end up on some gore blog, but i really hope that it doesn’t.
